Now comes some real digging in and working on list-building. Don’t expect your list to build itself. It’s your job to get yourself out there and find as many targeted and interested subscribers as you possibly can. Here are my best suggestions to build your email list and on how to keep it.

Website Sign Up Form:

Put a form on your website. It’s not enough to put a form on your homepage saying ‘Sign Up to Our Newsletter’, though.

You need to present your visitors with an irresistible offer, something they’ll have no problem handing over their closely guarded email address for. This method can show you immediate results if you’re getting enough traffic.

If your traffic is low to nil, then keep reading for other great ideas to build your list. Examples are a free report, an audio or video, or a workbook. Make it valuable – this is no time to cut corners!

Guest Blogging:

Bloggers are always looking for great, unique content. You can take advantage of this need by becoming a guest blogger. Target your blog to lead your reader to signing up to your email list.

To do this you’ll want the information in the blog post to be highly relevant to your email list. Deliver great information and value but leave them wanting to take the next logical step, which of course will be to sign up for your list.

Joint Ventures:

Start making friends with other website owners. Networking with other business owners is a smart move. You’ll develop relationships that can turn into win-win partnerships.


Finding highly targeted websites to promote your email list on can be a great way to build a list fast. Make sure you be careful with this method as you must have a very relevant offer that visitors will respond to.

Email marketing is one of the most effective marketing tactics available to businesses today.

The power of email marketing grows exponentially when you automatically send targeted messages based on specific customer behaviors rather than doing it manually.

The reality is no small business owner has time to write individual messages and send them to people one-by-one at just the right times.

Even if you have the budget to hire a staff or agency to help you, there aren’t enough hours in the day to manually leverage every email marketing opportunity available to you. That’s where automation changes the game.

Form Submission:

Every time someone submits a form on your website whether it’s your contact form, a subscription form, a form to download a free resource, or any other type of form you should have an email marketing message queued to go out immediately after the behavior is recorded.

For this to work, you need to make sure you’re using a form tool that integrates with your email marketing software, so the entire process can be automated and you can access reports seeing which forms are working and which should be improved or replaced.


Welcome Message:

Your welcome message is sent immediately after someone joins your email list.

This is the first contact between your brand and new subscribers, so ensure the message is consistent with your brand promise and sets accurate expectations. It’s a good idea to explain how often consumers will receive messages from you, what kind of content you’ll include, any special benefits they receive as subscribers and how to contact you if they have questions.

In addition, you can include links to your company website and social media accounts. You could also include a special discount as a thank-you for subscribing with a link to your online store. Just be careful not to make the message entirely self-promotional, or you might annoy your new subscribers.

Follow-up With Customers:

Do you follow-up with customers and prospects after they communicate with your customer support team?

Whether someone contacts your business by phone, email, or online chat, you should have a follow-up message ready to go out immediately after the communication is documented in your customer support software.

You can automate the entire process if you use a customer support tool that integrates with your email marketing tool.

Just write your follow-up message and set it to be sent automatically when a contact in your email marketing list completes a communication with a customer service representative.

This message could simply tell the customer or prospect how to get additional help if they need it, or it could include a survey to track the quality of their experience and overall satisfaction.

You could even include a discount or other special offer which they can use on a future purchase in order to convert a customer service issue into a sale.

Follow Up Message:

When someone makes a purchase from you, your email marketing software should be set up to automatically send a follow up message.

Not only should this message thank the person for their purchase, but it should also offer a cross-sell or up sell item. You can even include a discount to boost conversions.

To do this, you first have to determine which products or services to cross-sell or up sell for every product or service offered on your website.

Your automated message triggered by a purchase could say, “Since you loved [insert the item purchased here}, we thought you’may like [insert a related product here] too!”

Include some details about why the customer would like the suggested product or service and a link where they can purchase it immediately.

If you’may like, you can also include a discount or special offer in your message. Keep in mind, automated messages based on sales behaviors don’t have to be limited to completed purchases.

They can also be sent when someone moves to the next stage of your sales pipeline. This is particularly important for businesses that sell products or services with long sales cycles. The goal is to automatically send email messages that help push people through your sales funnel.

Therefore, consider sending messages when a prospect makes first contact with you, completes a sales call, completes a demo, nears the end of a free trial period, and so on.Email marketing 2

Up-Sell Message:

When a customer purchases something from your online store, which of your related products or services might naturally complement their purchase?

Identify those groups and pairings, then set up accompanying automated email marketing messages that go out when a customer purchases a product.

For example, if a customer buys puppy food from your online pet store, it may make sense to send an automated message offering puppy treats, toys or carpet cleaner.

You can include a discount with these items if you want to try to increase conversions. It’s always a good idea to test cross-sell messages with and without discounts to see if discounts actually convert more successfully. There’s no reason to lose money on discounts if you don’t have to.

Abandoned Cart:

Re-marketing can be very effective in pushing people at the bottom of the marketing funnel to make a purchase decision and buy.

If someone visits your online store, puts items into their shopping cart and then leaves your site before completing their purchase, you want to encourage them to follow through on a purchase decision.

You can do this by setting up an automated email message to encourage them to complete the purchase.

For example, your message could include a special offer such as free shipping or a discount on their entire purchase.

The key is to understand that people who abandon their shopping cart almost completed a purchase.

Do your research and try to figure out when people abandon their carts. The problem could be with your checkout process, your shipping fees or something else entirely.

Until you can address the problem, you can try to recapture people who abandon their carts with automated email marketing messages.

Thank You Message:

Thank you messages can be sent to your customers based on a variety of behavioral triggers such as making a purchase, attending a webinar, writing a review, and so on.

The key is to be sure your thank you messages sound authentic and make the recipients feel valued.

Saying thank you shows consumers that your brand is human and helps deepen your brand’s relationship with them. You’re also acknowledging consumers and helping them develop trust in your brand.

Keep it simple and sincere, and the perception of your brand – and the likelihood people will buy from you again and tell other people about your brand – improves significantly.

Unengaged Subscribers:

If subscribers on your email marketing list aren’t opening your messages, then you likely don’t them on your list.


Unengaged subscribers can hurt the deliverability of all of your email marketing campaigns, meaning your future messages will make it to fewer inboxes overall.

You need to try to re-engage your subscribers or remove them from your list to increase deliver-ability. How often you send a re-engagement message depends on how often you send messages to your subscribers in general.

If you only send one message per month, then setting up a re-engagement message to go to any subscribers who have not opened a message from you in six or 12 months is reasonable.

If you send messages weekly or more often, then you could shorten that time span to three months.

The goal is to remove people from your list who aren’t interested in your content or offers because their lack of engagement could be keeping your messages from getting into the inboxes of people who are interested and will buy.

Special Messages:

If customers have provided you with their birthdays, you can set up an automated message to wish them well every year by way of a special discount or offer.

You can do the same thing on the anniversary of their first purchase with you or, if they haven’t made a purchase, the day they subscribed to your mailing list.

These types of automated messages can help deepen your brand’s relationship with customers.

Acknowledging birthdays or thanking people for being a customer or subscriber every year can lead to increased loyalty, additional sales and brand advocacy.

New Technology:

highly competitive, marketers have embraced the new technology and the need has arisen to send graphically appealing newsletters and marketing messages.

You have only seconds to capture attention, and the right picture will grab quicker than the right copy, as they say, “a picture can be worth a thousand words”.

Just ask your clients if they would use plain white paper, rather than letterhead, to send an offline message to prospects and customers.

Use Your Imagination:

The ways to build your list are only limited by your own imagination. You will be the best person to determine how to get the most qualified subscribers onto your list.

Think about where the people you want to reach hang out. Do they visit chat forums to talk about their topic, read a certain kind of blog, visit certain news website, etc.?

our common sense and knowledge of your industry is going to lead you to the best ways. Keep trying new methods, testing the results and moving forward

I will say it again:

Automation works because it saves you a lot of time. There is no doubt that when you can automate tasks, your productivity and efficiency will improve and your costs will decrease.

However, you need to invest some time and effort up front in writing the messages, setting them up in your email marketing software, and integrating your email marketing tool with the other tools you use to track customer behaviors.

It’s well worth the time though, because each of these automated messages will give you a measurable improvement on your overall ROI.

Like you have rightly stated here, automation is germane to make responses and engagement much more easier and also, reaching out to the email list without spamming them.     Some time ago I had my first experience working with a good autoresponder. The main problem I had was a very bad conversion, surely I have a lot to learn.

  4. Very nice article and great advice to build up your own email marketing campaign/ email marketing lists. I made homepages at the turn of the millennium, using c ++ frontpage and so on. It was really boring and took time lots of time. Now I started to make pages again and everything is so easy, thanks to technology. I thought about adding some kind of email campaign to my sites, these tips will be really helpful. thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  5. Thank you for this article and your expertise on making an email list. I especially liked what you said about automated follow-ups for if the person calls or has any other correspondence.
    I didn’t know you could track someone’s shopping cart activities and actually be able to message them if they put things in the cart without buying it. That is definitely a good idea.
    That’s also interesting that you can keep track of who opens your messages and who doesn’t. But how does someone not opening the email get in the way of someone else receiving the email? I thought all the emails will get sent out to everyone.

    I totally agree with you on offering irresistible offer. For my first website, I am also thinking what useful “something” I can offer for free. I will definitely add some useful info. Also, I haven’t added signup form yet. I will do it soon. Your site is a great general overview. I also love the pictures in the article: the pictures on the top and several infographics.

    Now, let me tell you several points which may make your site more effective (Maybe I am wrong. It can be only my personal thought. If you don’t agree with me, please forget it).   

    Although this article is a great overview, some practical suggestions are missing. For example, you advised that automation program and customer support tool will be useful. But for a newbie like me, that does not help much. I need to do another search for an appropriate program and that can be another time-consuming work. Why don’t you suggest several programs which, you think, is GOOD? That will help your audience a lot & their confidence on you will be built. Also, it might be another chance for an affiliate offer.  

    Also, I had an impression that several sentences are quite long and wordy. Many web-surfer have no patience & they don’t like reading long sentences (at least, it is true for me).
